We have a responsibility to ensure that every DC student has access to a quality education. That's why we're calling on Mayor Bowser and the Council to work together and support the expansion of structured literacy training offerings for PK-5 educators and to require annual reporting of student academic data to caregivers.
This will empower families to play an active role in their children's education and make informed decisions about their academic progress.
In addition, we're pushing for data-driven solutions to support PK-5 literacy programs in DCPS and DC public charter schools. This includes funding for literacy programs that will help students build a strong foundation in reading, as well as access to resources like tutoring, mentoring, and after-school programs.
For Black and brown students, who have long gotten the short end of the budgetary stick in the District, these resources are all the more critical.
Together, we can make a real difference for students in the District. Ask Mayor Bowser and the Council to truly commit to a brighter future for our students, and urge councilmembers to include adequate funding for PK-5 literacy programs and student performance-measuring in the final FY2024 budget.
